Figure Skating Story — Maria Parfenova

By Maria Parfenova

Elisabeth Christ, age 17

Awareness of less common sports:

Q: How long have you been skating for?

A: Ever since I was 3, so for 14 years.

Q: What do you consider as your biggest accomplishment?

A: My biggest accomplishment is winning first place in the short program and finally beating my biggest competitor at the regional championships and then winning second in my long program, which allowed me to qualify for sectionals.

Q: What do you plan to do in the future with your figure skating career?

A: I plan to keep skating almost every day in college and still taking private lessons with my coach because I just love skating, and I couldn’t even think about quitting forever once I get to college, like most skaters I know do.

Q: What is a dream of yours regarding skating?

A: I am done competing, mostly because it takes up a lot of time and money I don’t have, but my goal now is to get my double axel, triple loop, and triple toe jumps landed and consistent by the time and if I do decide to stop skating.
