After a rough start to the season the Hopkinton football squad has managed to successfully turn a losing streak into a winning streak by defeating their last two opponents.
On October 2nd the Hillers traveled to Medfield in search of their first win after being defeated in each of their first three games. Hopkinton came out with something to prove as they began the first quarter with a 77 yard touchdown by Senior Jack Daly. Daly finished the game with 130 yards on 10 carries while Sophomore Quarterback Mike Decina completed 5 of 9 passes for 28 yards. Paul Throckmorton, Jeff Spiegel, and Alex Anagnostaraus all recorded interceptions for the Hillers in their 35-20 victory over the Mefield Warriors. With the first win of the season under their belts, Hopkinton began to prepare for their next opponent Norton who remained undefeated after week 4 of High School football concluded.
On October 9th the Hillers made their way to Norton in hopes of establishing themselves as a Tri-Valley League contender by defeating the 4-0 Norton Lancers. Decina came up big in this game completing 10 of 16 passes for 124 yards while finding Senior Wide Receiver Mike Maresca in the end zone on two separate occasions for two touchdowns. With two minutes left to play in the game the Hillers were trailing the Lancers by three points as Decina took the game into his own hands and scored the game winning touchdown with a 46 yard run. “We never gave up throughout the game and that is why we were able to rebound whenever they scored and pull out a win,†stated Senior linebacker Brian Giusti. The final score was 20-16.
