Model UN Extremely Successful at UMass Conference

By: Elise LeCrone

Last month, eleven delegates from the Model United Nations club attended an annual conference at UMass Amherst. In addition to having a fantastic time debating international issues and meeting new people, we were ecstatic to win the Best Small Delegation Award for the second year in a row, as well as six individual awards. Seniors Liz Gamache (Best Delegate Award), Pat Maruska (Outstanding Delegate Award), and Connor Fitzpatrick; juniors Molly Karg (Outstanding Delegate Award) and Derek Bressler (Honorable Mention); sophomores Elise LeCrone (Outstanding Delegate Award), Meghan Smart, and Brittany O’Loughlin; and freshmen Dan Genkin (Honorable Mention) and Catie Maruska all played a vital role in the group’s success. Our conference experience also would not have been possible without the help and leadership of our advisor, Mr. Wilander. Awards are given in recognition of exemplary performance in committees, which are groups of delegates from different schools all over the Northeast. These committees are tasked with working to solve global issues, such as nuclear nonproliferation, climate change, poverty, and situations of hostility between nations.

Although we will deeply miss our amazing seniors, the club is looking forward to next year and even more great experiences. Model UN meets weekly on Wednesday afternoons in Mr. Wilander’s room to discuss international affairs, in addition to attending conferences. If you think you would be interested in joining us, or would just like to check it out, feel free to talk to Mr. Wilander or our president, Liz Gamache, or join our Facebook group, HHS MUN (
