The Field Hockey team had a promising start to the 2025 season, with its sights set on winning a trophy in its first Division I playoffs in recent years.
The team began the season with a strong 4-0 record in the first week, followed by a back-and-forth pattern of wins and losses in recent weeks.
“We certainly haven’t had a bad season,” Senior Captain Mary Finnegan said. “But our team holds itself and each other to very high standards. We all want a lot out of this season, and we want to improve at every practice and every game.”
The team’s drive to achieve a great season has paid off, as they’re currently sitting at #8 in the MIAA Division I Power Rankings.
“This is really good for our first season in Division I,” Senior Captain Abby Burke said. “The past few games have been a bit rough, but I’m hopeful that we’ll pick it up as we get closer to the playoffs.”
This seat follows their recent 1-1 tie with Norwood, an important game for the team as they are one of the team’s biggest competitors in the TVL (Tri-Valley League), and their 1-3 loss to Westwood.
Despite their disappointment in these outcomes, the team was able to bounce back even stronger, thanks to their positive mentality.
“During our Westwood game, we didn’t play as well as we had hoped to, but we all recognized that we played a very strong fourth quarter,” Finnegan said. “One way we are working towards a stronger season is having a ‘win the day’ mentality, which for us means taking things day by day and doing all we can to succeed during a drill, practice, or play during a game.”
This attitude has helped them in securing a 7-1 win over Ashland this past week.
“I am hoping that we can get momentum going and start winning more games again. My real hope is that we make it far into the playoffs and hopefully to the finals,” Burke said.
Finnegan and Burke both believe that this goal, alongside winning the TVL, is within reach for this team and that a strong start in the playoffs could enable them to bring home a trophy.
“We only have a few games left of the regular season, but looking ahead to the playoffs, I think it’s important to start off strong. We are likely going to have our first playoff at home, and I hope we can capitalize on that and set the tone for the rest of our playoff run,” Finnegan said. “The whole team wants a long playoff run. I know we all love this team and we want to play with each other for as long as possible,” Finnegan said.
Their high rankings so early on into the season, alongside their talented roster, set the team up for success as they head into the playoffs.
“We started off a lot stronger this year because we are an older team of mostly seniors. A goal [the seniors] have for this team is to get a trophy in the playoffs,” Burke said.
