When the final bell rings to conclude the school day, many students head to the FitLab, HHS’s very own gym.
People come for many different reasons, whether they’re everyday students, athletes, or even staff themselves. While each and every person comes seeking different routines and different results, they all seek physical fitness and improvement.
Overseeing this space is Ms.Marino, who serves as the Academic Coordinator for the START program, a unique transitional program for students who have fallen behind on their studies, often due to life challenges.
Marino said the decision to supervise the FitLab came naturally after years of going to the gym herself.
“I already went to my personal gym after work anyway”, Marino said. “It’s convenient and keeps me motivated, even on the days I’m not in the mood to work out.”
The FitLab operates Monday through Thursday from 2:35 to 3:35 PM, giving students four afternoons every week to find the time to work fitness into their day. Marino says she prefers keeping that schedule consistent, but can be flexible about it.
“I wouldn’t increase the days–I’d like to think four out of five school days is pretty solid,” Marino said.
For Marino, the most rewarding part of the job is watching students enjoy fitness, and offer support, advice and encouragement to one another.
“The students go to the FitLab because they want to be there,” Marino said. “Seeing them interact and help each other become better weight trainers is great to see.”
However, it can also be understood that safety and form are also priorities, especially in the lifting world. Marino monitors around the room to make sure the students are using the equipment correctly, and cleaning up after themselves in order to avoid mistakes and injury.
“If need be, I’ll show students proper form and have them repeat it. I also make sure each and every weight is re-racked and that nothing’s left lying around when everyone is done,” Marino said, assuring students and staff alike are safe and prioritizing a controlled environment.
She encourages those that are new to the FitLab to take small steps, and to not be intimidated by the progress of others.

“No one was an amazing sprinter or crazy bodybuilder on Day 1,” Marino said. “I tell them to start small–even ten minutes on the treadmill is progress.”
Marino also reminds students to find the right balance between challenge and safety, so that the most progress can be seen at the safest level.
“Don’t go beyond what you’re capable of, where you might hurt yourself,” Marino said.
“Enjoy the process and be proud of every achievement.”
Marino also observed that most FitLab visitors have already show great gym etiquette and respect for the room, creating a positive and safe environment for newcomers and growth.
Supervising the FitLab, Marino added, has helped her form stronger connections with students.
“I make it a point to talk with them and sincerely get to know what they’re doing. I get to know them more personally than just saying ‘hi’ in the halls.”
One of her favorite experiences has been encouraging more girls to lift weights, and to feel confident in the gym.
“It’s great seeing girls wanting to try and improve their athleticism,” Marino said. “Fitness is for a lifetime.”
Through her work in the FitLab, Ms. Marino has created not just another place to exercise, but rather a space in which each and every member of HHS can build strength, confidence, grit, and lifelong habits for their own health.
