“Meeting…” is an ongoing series featuring people from all parts of the high school community (inspired by the NYT Open series of the same name).

What is something you’ve worked on recently that really interests you?

I wrote an essay in AP Lang about Taylor Swift and how she’s a good influence. It was an argumentative essay. I really liked doing research on her because she’s been a big role model for me for a long time and I’ve never had the chance to be able to discuss her in an academic way.

Tell us about a “project,” in or out of school, you’ve worked on and you’re especially proud of.

In voice lessons, I’m really proud of the progress I’ve made. I started in June of 2020 because I’ve always liked singing but I never had people in my family who knew how to sing and who could teach me. I thought I might as well learn how to do it better.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I’m really into rocks and crystals. Sometimes I’ll be walking down the street, find a rock and keep walking and give it to someone. I love rocks.

What is your secret to happiness?

Therapy. But also being grateful for the little things I guess. At least it’s funny outside, and at least my name isn’t Alyssa.

What is your superpower?

I always know what time it is. I was out eating lunch in the atrium and I just had a gut feeling that lunch was over and the bell rang like a second later. It was magical.

What do you want others to know about you?

I don’t like to wear impractical accessories. I prioritize practicality over functionality.

How long have you been involved in the drama club?

I did my first musical in seventh grade. I’ve been involved ever since.

What was your favorite part about being a part of the drama club?

I liked making new friends with my sweet seniors. I liked getting to perform again. I haven’t performed in about three years. I also learned how to be friendlier and less closed off.

What is your favorite thing to talk about?

Music. I have a lot of opinions on music. I have a lot of music education. I am educated.

What is your zodiac sign?

Gemini sun, Libra moon, Leo rising, Cancer mercury, Cancer venus, Aries mars.

How do you think that impacts how you act and how others perceive you?

I think that I do act a lot like a Gemini because I consider myself to be intellectual and witty. But I am also reflective of what other people think of me. I am one of the people who blames what I do on my zodiac sign but I think it helps me understand myself better.

Who or what inspires you?

Megan Joyce. She knows the way.

Name one thing you’re excited about right now.

I’m excited to get my driver’s license. My test date is in about a month. I’ve felt anxious about it but I don’t really think I’m bad at driving. I think I’d be able to pass. If they ask me to get on the highway, that would be a different story.

What is your best advice for fellow students?

Don’t limit yourself because you don’t think you can do it. You might as well try and see if you can do it. If you can’t, at least you tried.
