Joe Biden inaugurated: Becomes 46th President of the United States
U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts proctored President Joe Biden’s oath of office to become the nation’s next Commander in Chief.
The day started With Joe Biden attending Mass along with Vice President Harris, Senate leaders Chuck Schumer and Mitch Mcconnel, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and House Minority Leader Kevin Mccarthy NPR reports.
Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota was tasked with Introducing people to the stage.
“This is the day democracy picks itself up,” Klobuchar said.
The inauguration featured Musical guests such as Jennifer Lopez, Garth brooks, and a poem by Amanda Gorman.
“Being American is more than a pride we inherit,” Gorman said.
Lady Gaga was tasked with leading the National Anthem.
At around 11:40, Kamala Harris was sworn in as the first female Vice President of the United States by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
At around 11:50 Justice John Roberts swore in Joe Biden as President of the United States followed by a rendition of Hail to the Chief played by the United States Marines Band.
Biden started his inaugural address speech by saying, “This is America’s day, this is democracy’s day,” and “Today we celebrate the triumph, not of a candidate, but of a cause, the cause of democracy.”
The theme for Joe Biden’s inaugural address was one of unity.
“And together we shall write an American story of hope, not fear. Of unity, not division. Of light, not darkness,” Biden said.
Joe Biden said he wants to end the polarization politics has brought to America.
“Let’s begin to listen to one another again,” Biden said, “Hear one another. See one another. Show respect to one another. Politics doesn’t have to be a raging fire, destroying everything in its path.”
President Biden reinforced his promise to work across the aisle and to help all Americans, Republicans and Democrats alike.
“I will fight as hard for those who did not support me as for those who did,” Biden said.
Biden said he wants the nation to work together to defeat the pandemic
“We must set aside politics and finally face this pandemic as one nation, one nation,” he said.
Biden also addressed the calls for racial justice across America.
“The cry of racial justice is 400 years in the making,” Biden said.
Biden said that he wants to work to defeat the challenges facing the country and to restore hope to Americans.
“And we’ll lead not merely by the example of our power, but by the power of our example,” Biden said.
Biden ended his speech by saying that he wants to create a better country for future generations.
CNN Reporters Manu Raju and Ali Zaslav say that some GOP lawmakers were pleased with President Biden’s speech.
Pence attended the Inauguration, while Trump left Washington for Palm Beach Florida the Morning of the inauguration.
Biden plans to sign several executive orders within his first days of office, including rejoining the Paris Climate Accord.
