On Thursday, April 14th, the HHS girls varsity softball team defeated Holliston with a final score of 7-4.
Hopkinton started the game off strong by getting two players on base with walks. Junior Nicole Mellor hit a triple, putting two runs on the board for Hopkinton. Holliston retaliated by hitting three doubles and scoring two runs, and left the score tied 2-2 at the end of the first inning.
At the bottom of the second inning Holliston hit a double and took the lead 3-2, but at the top of the third HHS junior Emily Jarvis scored a run and tied the game up at 3-3.
Holliston continued to hit doubles and scored another run.  Going into the sixth inning, the Hillers were down by one run.  Senior Sarah Kenney hit a single to get on base and then senior Chelsea Adams walked to first. Both girls successfully stole to put the team in a scoring position, and then senior Steph Hadley walked to first. The bases were loaded when Holliston’s catcher missed a ball and Hopkinton scored.  Senior Liz Keefe then stepped up to the plate and hit a ball to center field, but the center fielder dropped it, allowing Hopkinton to pull ahead and win the game.
Coach Steve Simoes said, “I was very proud of the way we competed. The girls kept their composure and battled even when things weren’t going well.† “It was a huge team effort, we were down one for a little while, but we knew it wasn’t over and we knew we would come back with some runs,” stated senior captain Liz Keefe.
