Teacher, Coach, Club Advisor: the Many Roles of Renee Hilbrunner

Hopkinton High is home to over a thousand students, who are learning from some of the best teachers in the state. With over a hundred faculty members committed to teaching, taking on various clubs, or coaching sports, one teacher stands out: Renee Hilbrunner.

After graduating from Groton-Dunstable High School, Hilbrunner attended St. Lawrence University in New York, then proceeded to Boston College for graduate school. Hilbrunner decided to pursue a career in teaching after being inspired by one of her high school teachers. “I wanted to give back to the educational community that has given so much to me,” said Hilbrunner.

Not only has Hilbrunner been influenced by her own teachers but has influenced many students at HHS. Senior Bridget Stafford had Hilbrunner for English her junior year and credits Hilbrunner to pushing her teaching aspirations, “She inspired me to push myself and give everything my all, and have a positive outlook on life. She’s a role model to me.”

Hilbrunner has been teaching English at Hopkinton High for just over a year but already has a lot under her belt. In her first year, she alternated between teaching History and English throughout the school year, along with co-advising Red Cross Club. In the spring of 2015 she was been named the newest coach to the girls varsity soccer team. The 2015 fall season became her first time taking on the role as head coach. Her passion for soccer began in elementary school and continued throughout college, ultimately driving her to apply and successfully land the position as head coach. “I was excited by the opportunity to work with my students in a different capacity, and wanted to teach, develop, and build the girls’ soccer program at Hopkinton High School” said Hilbrunner.

In one year, Hilbrunner has accomplished more than some teachers can say for their whole careers. Over the course of 2016, she aims to develop more as a teacher and coach and hopes to, “instill self-worth and leadership within students and athletes, while preparing them for college and life after high school graduation.” Momina Haidri, senior at HHS who had Hilbrunner for both history and english in 2014 admires Hilbrunner and commends her teaching methods, “Ms. H connects with each student to make them feel comfortable in her class and she goes out of her way to help out a student”

Her teaching career first took off in Hopkinton and she will always hold HHS close. “I am committed to academic excellence and building meaningful relationships with my students and colleagues,” said Hilbrunner. “I am happy to be a part of the HHS community.”
